MIKALENTA TISSUE Allan Brown wrote the following:
"I build and fly power models from the nostalgia period, that is pre 1960. I try to use only the materials available at that time which means using tissue to cover them, the larger models need a heavy weight tissue for the wing and when my favourite type became unavailable I took advice from Mike Woodhouse and tried the Mikalenta tissue.
I have just finished covering my latest project with the Mikalenta and am very impressed with the results. Its quite strong, a test wing I covered resisted a firm push with the ball of the thumb to some considerable force before splitting. It dopes up to air tight in 4 or 5 coats of 50/50 dope thinners and shrinks just enough.
I used dope to attach the tissue to the wing; the frame is given two coats of full strength dope including the undercambered ribs on. I found that the wet strength was poor so I covered the wing dry the tissue was stuck to the frame with thinners which activated the dope, a little extra dope was used on the undercamber just to make sure. Any small creases or wrinkles came out with the first coat of 50/50 dope. After 4 or 5 coats of 50/50 dope/thinners and the wing was air tight, stiff and strong. I used red and yellow Mikalenta on the wing the colours are bright and should help with visibility.
This tissue is just what I need for my models and will be using it from now on."
